SOMTech Computer Support
SOMTech provides computer support for School of Medicine departments that have contracted for our services.
Support service covers:
- Technical support
- Hardware and limited software support
- Network troubleshooting
- Virus/spyware removal
- Basic printer troubleshooting
- Desktop and notebook PC installations
- Installation and configuration of hardware and software according to VCU Security Standards
- New workstation installations can take up to 10 working days but are usually completed within 7 working days. This rule does not apply to users who workstation crashed beyond repair and has a new or spare to replace the defective workstation
- Microsoft Active Directory and Novell Netware Administration and Support
- Serve as liaison between VCU Technology Services and SOM faculty and staff in setting up storage and backup on centrally managed servers
- Setup network shares, printers, user accounts and groups per department specifications
- Recommend solutions for securely storing research data
- Assist faculty and staff with setting up remote access to servers via WebVPN client
- Peripherals

- Install computer peripherals via USB, Firewire, or Bluetooth
- Proactive monitoring via LANDesk
- Proactive monitoring and maintenance of workstations to ensure compliance with VCU Security Standards
- Regularly scan workstations for vulnerabilities and install patches as needed
- Asset Inventory
- Maintain up-to-date workstation inventory
- Third-party software
- Installation and limited support
- The department or division must have a valid license and provide a CD/DVD for third-party applications
- Purchasing recommendations
- Consultation and determination of hardware/software to meet department faculty and staff needs
Supported operating systems include
- Mac OS X (10.3 & 10.4)
- Windows 2000 & XP Professional
Mac OS X 10.5 and WIndows Vista are currently not supported.
