The goal of Faculty Development in the School of Medicine is to
assist faculty in becoming accomplished, productive, and successful
in their chosen endeavors of teaching, research, patient care, or
administration, and in sustaining their vitality both now and in
the future.
The functions include
facilitating, guiding, and developing faculty enrichment activities
and programs in the SOM, and administering knowledge and skills
development opportunities for SOM faculty in areas of career development,
teaching, research, clinical practice, and administration.
Specific activities include
conducting an orientation program for new faculty; conducting workshops
on teaching for Course and Clerkship Directors; teaching faculty
to produce and use computer based instruction (CBI) and other technologies
in medical education; brokering and promoting faculty career development,
mentoring, and leadership training activities locally and nationally;
assisting in the design of faculty development programs conducted
by departments, the Curriculum Office, and special programs, such
as Women in Medicine and Science, the Virginia Generalist Physicians
Initiative, and the SOM Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities;
conducting periodic assessment of faculty needs and programs for
SOM, and coordinating and promoting faculty career development activities
and issues within the University.
