Eligibility

Matriculation: In addition to complying with medical school entrance requirements, the M.D./Ph.D. applicant must

  • Show a strong commitment to biomedical research
  • Have substantial biomedical research experience
  • Have combined MCAT scores of 30 or better and GPAs of 3.5 or better. Exceptions to the MCAT and GPA cutoffs have been made for students with extensive research experience.

Admission from M1 class : The Program has also admitted students with strong research backgrounds who are currently enrolled in the first year of studies at VCU’s School of Medicine. Students who are in their first year of medical school at VCU and wish to be considered for admission to the Program should contact the director. If the director finds the student’s academic and research record acceptable, the student will be asked to complete a supplemental application [Word] and reference forms [Word]. These forms can also be obtained in the M.D./Ph.D. office from Sandra Sorrell.

Students currently enrolled in a graduate program or who have been awarded a Ph.D. degree in a biomedical science are not eligible for the program. Students who have completed the degree requirements for a Master’s degree are eligible.
