Distance Categories
Google Maps is used to determine mileage from MCV campus to each preceptor’s practice (street address and zip code).
Preceptorships are also available in more distant areas such as Williamsburg, Kilmarnock, Emporia, or Fredericksburg. These sites will be assigned ONLY when specifically requested by students.
** The mileage range may vary from year to year according to the characteristics/practice locations of participating preceptors.
Placement Goals
The mileage that students travel for their preceptor placements will be considered cumulatively over the M1 and M2 years. FCM will attempt to reduce inequities in the total range of miles traveled by each student. See possible travel combinations for the M1 and M2 years listed below. All students should expect to travel beyond Zone 1—if not during M1, then during M2. Students are expected to make provisions for their own transportation.
In addition to travel considerations, preceptor placements must meet curricular requirements. For example, FCM attempts to expose students to the full age spectrum of patient care in generalist medicine. Therefore, students will not be placed with a pediatrician twice. Some exceptions to the travel policy may be made based on curricular considerations.

Exceptions to Travel Policy
Students who anticipate difficulty managing travel requirements for their preceptorships are encouraged to contact the FCM office. FCM staff will listen to your concerns and assist you in problem-solving your particular situation.
Automatic exceptions to the travel policy will be made only for needs documented through the Office of Disability Support Services. Students who feel their circumstances warrant further consideration may submit a written summary of their needs. These written statements will be reviewed conjointly by FCM and the Curriculum Office.
