Thomas N. Wise, M.D. is Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry. He is Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Chair of Psychiatry at George Washington University School of Medicine. He also is Professor of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University Inova Campus and Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Wise graduated from Dartmouth College, Duke University School of Medicine and completed his residency at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center where he finished a Liaison Medicine Fellowship. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry and certified in Psychosomatic Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, the American College of Physicians and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Wise has published over 300 journal article or text book chapters. He is co-editor of Psychiatry for Primary Care Physicians now in its 2nd edition. Dr. Wise has received the Thomas Hackett award from the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and the Distinguished Service Award of the American Psychiatric Association. He is currently editor of Advances in Psychosomatic Medicine and served as editor of Psychosomatics . He is on the editorial boards of Psychosomatic Medicine; Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics,; and the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. He has been president of the American Psychosomatic Society and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. His clinical interests include the treatment of patients with medical and psychiatric disorders, those with affective disorders, and individuals suffering from sexual disorders. His research interests include the role of personality variables in psychiatric disorders and how to best integrate Psychiatry into the general hospital setting via consultation liaison psychiatry.
