David Peter Ascher, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.P. is currently Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and Professor of Pediatrics, Virginia Commonwealth University, Inova Campus. Prior to his current role as Chairman of Pediatrics at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, Dr. Ascher served as Chairman of Pediatrics at Wilford Hall Medical Center.
Dr. Ascher graduated medical school from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and went on to complete his pediatric residency training in the United States Air Force at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He then completed fellowship training in pediatric infectious disease at The Uniformed Services University Health Sciences Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2005, he completed an executive MBA program at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Dr. Ascher has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and mentored scores of medical students, residents and fellows in career choices and in award winning research. He has received the Jay Sanford Life Time Military Infectious Disease Award and has been honored by the American Academy of Pediatrics. He currently serves as a Professor of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University and has academic positions as Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Virginia and Professor of Pediatrics at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Ascher has spearheaded over 20 missions to Central and South America over his career which have involved medical student and resident education.
Over his 4 years here at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, Dr. Ascher has been successful in leading change at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children with: an improved the Pediatric Residency program which notably has averaged 6 pediatric residents presenting at the National Pediatric Ambulatory Society meeting; high quality inpatient pediatric care with round the clock neonatologists, hospitalists, and pediatric intensivists; and early adoption of core measures for children- Children’s Asthma Care and the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program. During this time, IFHC has opened a 22 bed Adolescent Unit, a 16 bed additional NICU, a 6 bed Intermediate Care Unit, a Pediatric Sedation Unit and a Pediatric Emergency Unit
