Welcome

The Inner City/Rural Preceptorship (IC/RP) provides enrichment activities for students interested in practicing in medically underserved communities in Virginia. Students choose either an inner city or rural track.Group Picture for ICRP

Open to all M-1 and first semester M-2 students currently enrolled at the VCU School of Medicine, the open admissions procedure includes an application with on-line essay providing the following information:

  • Why you are interested in underserved medicine?
  • Describe any previous exposure to underserved communities (inner city, rural or international).
  • What you hope to gain from this experience.

The application form can be found by accessing the application website at http://www.vcu.edu/icrp/application.html.

The dual mission of the IC/RP program is to increase the number of primary care physicians serving underserved communities and to improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of these physicians.

Through didactic and service learning, the IC/RP program provides opportunities for students to cultivate interests in serving medically disadvantaged communities, expand awareness of the disparities of healthcare in urban and rural areas, engage in community outreach projects, and build skills in cultural competency and leadership.

Program activities includes electives during the M-1 and M-2 years, faculty mentoring, social activities, community outreach opportunities, participation as a student mentor, a six-month preceptorship in a community selected by the student, and participation in outcomes research.
