Student Recognition
The School of Medicine sponsors several annual programs to draw attention to the continuing achievements of our students and to recognize their accomplishments in advance of the awarding of their degrees. The three programs described in the following sections are named as a means of commemorating individuals who played a pioneering role in establishing the strong record of advanced degree training at the Medical College of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Awards and Criteria
Recognition of Student Scholarly Achievement: Awards, Criteria and Deadlines [PDF]
C.C. Clayton Award
These awards are made to both Ph.D. and Master’s students based on graduate achievement. Each Department/Program can nominate one student in each category. The submission deadline is January 31. (The award provides an award of $1,000 for the Ph.D. nominee and $500 for the Master’s nominee; criteria to be met by the nominee are described on the attached “C.C. Clayton Awards” information sheet. January 31 deadline.
Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship
This award is made at the Ph.D. and M.S. level with criteria slightly more stringent than the C.C. Clayton Award with a single nominee permitted for the School of Medicine. (The award provides an award of $2,500). Nominees for the Ph.D. level award must be in their third year (or later) of study and be continuing into the Fall of the following academic year. Nomination criteria appear on the attachment. January 13 deadline.

Marian Waller Scholarship
This award is made to a female graduate student with dependant child(ren) who is a Virginia resident and eligible for financial aid. Departments should submit a short letter identifying their nomination based on the above criteria and any information that would support the nomination. A single nomination is made by the School of Medicine with an award of $1,000 applied to the Fall term after submission of the nomination. By this criterion, nominees should NOT be students who are likely to have completed degree work prior to the Fall term of the next academic year. January 31 deadline.

Honor Society of the Phi Kappa Phi
The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society recognizes outstanding academic achievement of graduate students. The School of Medicine is permitted to identify approximately 10 percent of our students in Masters and Doctoral training respectively as nominees. Criteria are identified on the attachment. September 15 deadline.

MCV Alumni “Senior Student” Award
This is an award of $500 to an advanced Ph.D. student who is identified by a Basic Science Department. The award rotates through the Basic Science Departments in the order indicated on the MCV Alumni Association Award Schedule. The student must be completing the degree in the Spring term in which the award is made. The MCV Alumni Association works directly with the designated department to identify the nominee.
