The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) is jointly appointed by the CEO of MCVH and the Dean of the School of Medicine. The GMEC reports to the Medical Executive Committee of the Faculty via the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Medical Executive Committee of the Hospital via the Chief Medical Officer and then to the Board of Directors of VCUHS.  Appointments to the Committee include:  3-5 Department Chairs, all program directors, the Chair or Co-Chairs of the Housestaff Council, and as ex officio members the VCUHS Chief Medical Officer, the ACOS for Education for the VAMC, and the DIO.  The Chair of the GMEC is selected from the Departmental Chair membership.

The GMEC meets quarterly on the second Tuesday of March, June, September, and December.  The GMEC subcommittees meet in the eight alternate months.

The role of the GMEC in establishing and implementing policies and procedures regarding the quality of education and the work environment for all residents is achieved through the work of its Subcommittees:

Subcommittee reports are presented to and acted upon by the full GME Committee at the quarterly meetings.

The Resident Work Life Committee is charged with the responsibility of developing a monitoring strategy for the implementation of the 80-hours duty hour regulation.  This committee develops data collection methods and works with each program in their implementation of monitoring resident hours.  In particular, this committee intervenes in situations where there are violations of the rules and works with programs to identify corrective solutions.  This committee has taken as part of its responsibility to improve the work environment and social interactions for all programs.

The Policy and Procedures Committee is charged with the responsibility of monitoring, revising, updating, and recommending changes to current policies or developing new policies based upon ACGME and VCUHS needs and requirements.

The Competency Committee is charged with assisting all specialty and subspecialty programs to develop programs specifically within the framework of the ACGME outcomes project and the six competencies.  The Committee acts as a resource, gathering “best practices” ideas that may be implemented or modified for use by the various programs within the institution.
