| On Aug. 12, the 184 students in the Class of 2008 were cloaked in their first white coats by members of the school’s senior faculty, marking the beginning of a students’ four-year journey toward attaining their medical degree. |
This year’s keynote speaker was pediatric neurologist, Donald W. Lewis, M.D., a 1979 alumnus of the VCU School of Medicine and an associate professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Lewis also practices at Children's Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk. |
Students listen as Dr. Lewis spoke about the importance of compassion and empathy in delivering medical care.

| During the ceremony, Jeff Leary, Jon Schmitz and Arul Thomas (from right to left), together with the entire incoming class, recited the Hippocratic Oath, which articulates a doctor’s responsibilities to his or her patients. |
The students’ white coats are intended to serve as a reminder to students that they are now representing the medical field.
