Tuition Repayment

scholar

The National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program is fully funded by federal dollars. This program recruits health professionals to provide primary health services in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA). In return, the NHSC Loan Repayment Program assists clinicians in their repayment of qualifying educational loans that are still owed.

Recipients must be committed to completing a primary care residency and practicing in a designated Virginia Medically Underserved Area (VMUA) after completing residency.

The NHSC Loan Repayment program pays recipients $20,000 dollars per year for four years after they go into practice in designated underserved areas of Virginia, paying up to $80,000 dollars of their loans.

In addition to the loan repayment funds, this program offers an additional 39 percent of the loan amount to cover income taxes. Consult the HRSA Web site for information pertaining to the HPSA designations in Virginia.
