International/Inner City/Rural Preceptorship (ICRP)
Program Overview
Students are introduced to community-oriented primary care (COPC), systems-based practice (SBP), service learning (SL) and the foundational concepts of cultural competency and health disparities through a combination of didactics, experiential learning and discussion sessions.
Individualized observation experiences help students gain insight into the operations of a variety of university and community agencies. Students use targeted writing assignments and follow-up discussions to explore these experiences more deeply, specifically as they relate to COPC, SBP, SL and our foundational concepts.
Program Logistics
- Each student participating in the program is assigned an advisor in the Department of Family Medicine.
- Students participate in an elective featuring topics designed to provide a greater understanding of underserved populations and their needs. First- and second-year students are assigned to work with a preceptor in their chosen track as part of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course.
- Third- and fourth-year students spend six months in a rural or inner city community site. Sites are chosen based on student interest and resource availability.
- Fourth-year students complete a community research proposal or project that they present at a reception at the end of the fourth year.
Electives
A six-week elective is offered to M1 students in the spring and M2 students in the fall. Participation in the elective is mandatory for ICRP students but is open to all interested medical students.
The International/Inner City/Rural Preceptorship electives are designed for first- and second-year medical students. These serve both as the starting point for all students planning to enroll in the ICRP program and as an introduction to key concepts in COPC, SBP and SL for all interested students.
