International/Inner City/Rural Preceptorship (ICRP)

Program Overview

Students participate in unique learning experiences through out all four years of their undergraduate medical education. Through a combination of didactics, discussion, reflection, supervised community experiences, and clinical preceptorships, students explore and apply foundational concepts of community oriented primary care, systems based practice, cultural competency, and health disparities.

Program Logistics

Physicians and Patient
  • First- and second-year students participate in:
    • 6-week elective courses during the spring of M1 and the fall of the M2 year.
    • Clinical preceptorships in their chosen track as part of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course.
    • Monthly journal club sessions.
    • Community service for a total of 20 hours M1 and 20 hours M2.
  • Third- and fourth-year students complete clerkship rotations in underserved communities in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and general Surgery. Depending on the discipline, each rotation is 2 to 4 week long.
  • Fourth-year students complete a community research project that they present at a reception at the end of the fourth year.
