The CARITAS Clinic is a portable, student-led clinic which provides basic health screenings for the CARITAS “guests.” Included in these screenings are blood pressure, vital signs, cholesterol and glucose screenings, pulmonary function testing and BMI measurements with a patient-education focus. The free clinics are offered one evening a month for six months throughout the academic year.
CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond involved to Assure Shelter) is an organization which responds to the huge unmet need for emergency shelter for homeless adults in the cold winter months. More than 150 faith communities participate in the congregation-based model, providing over 30,000 nights of shelter.
Objectives for the clinic are for medical students to:
- Address potential stereotypical perceptions of the homeless
- Build awareness of the social and medical issues of the homeless population in the area
- Expand proficiency in provider-patient interactions
- Provide health screenings to the homeless
