Continuing Professional Development and Evaluation Studies

The Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Campus (VCU) Office of Continuing Professional Development & Evaluation Studies (CPDE) comprises two program areas: the Continuing Medical Education program area and the Evaluation Studies program area.

Continuing Medical Education

Through the CME program, CPDE offers educational activities to enhance the clinical competence and professional development of physicians.   CPDE manages programs for physicians and other health care professionals throughout Virginia, the Mid-Atlantic region, and the United States. These activities include annual conferences, regularly scheduled community based Egyptian Building presentations, clinically-oriented experiences held at VCU Health System's Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and the McGuire Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, independent learning opportunities, and both printed and on-line enduring materials.

CPDE hosts one of the larger university continuing medical  education programs in the United States. Annually, over 17,000 physicians and health care professionals participate in VCU sponsored and jointly sponsored continuing education activities.  Each activity is designed to meet identified educational needs in clinical practice and health care delivery, in an era of rapidly expanding knowledge, new technologies, and progressive demands on health care professionals.

Mission Statement for CME

Evaluation Studies

Through the Evaluation Studies program, CPDE conducts research and evaluation studies across the continuum of medical education.  The goals of the Evaluation Studies program are:

  • to offer evaluation services to enhance teaching and learning of VCU faculty who provide undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education; and
  • to conduct research and utilize results to continuously improve educational effectiveness by exploring the professional development of physicians, their learning, clinical behavior, and patient outcomes.
