M.D. Program

Recruitment Activities
The Admissions Office recruits and manages the 6,000-plus person applicant pool each year. The office provides assistance and advice to pre-med advisors, which includes individual counseling—more than 1,200 consult sessions per year. Phone counseling is also provided with 40–50 calls per day from June to February and 15–20 calls per day from March to May. From September to November, the office recruits at various undergraduate universities, both in-state and out-of-state. From May to August, the office hosts various special groups who come to tour the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. All requests for on-campus counseling and tours are limited to group recruitment activities.

“Virtual” Open House
The VCU School of Medicine provides a “Virtual” Open House for premedical students living across the United States. Dean Strauss and several faculty provide information about VCU, the application process, preparing for medical school, on campus research and our combined programs. A virtual tour of the campus is part of the open house activity. This virtual experience is almost as good as being here. Enjoy.
Small Group Campus Visits
Tours of our campus may be arranged for premedical college organizations by calling the VCU School of Medicine Admissions office, 804-828-9629. Please allow at least six weeks for arrangements.
Guaranteed Admissions Program /Preferred Applicant Track
Each year the Guaranteed Admissions Program accepts 20 high school students. After completing their four-year undergraduate education at VCU, these students are guaranteed admission to the medical school.
The Preferred Applicant Track is an alternative for students already enrolled at select undergraduate colleges and universities. Students apply at the end of their sophomore year. If accepted and all requirements are met, those students are guaranteed admission into the VCU School of Medicine. Up to 15 VCU students are accepted into the program each year. Up to two students are also selected for the VCU preferred applicant track from each of the following colleges and universities: George Mason University, Hampton University, Hampden-Sydney College; Virginia Military Institute, William and Mary College, and Randolph-Macon Collge.
The Admissions Office provides counseling, mentoring programs and coursework for all students in the Guaranteed Admissions Program and Preferred Applicant Track.
For more information please visit the VCU Honors College.
Collegiate Summer Economics Institute
The Collegiate Summer Economics Institute places two students at VCU SOM each summer to complete rotating mentorships with School of Medicine faculty. The Admissions Office coordinates the logistics of and recruits for the program, providing support to the students and evaluating the program for Collegiate schools.
“Virtual” Second Look
A “Virtual” Second Look is developed by the VCU School of Medicine to further entice medical school applicants to seriously consider choosing us as the place to experience excellence in medical education. If you have been accepted or are on the waitlist you will receive an e-mail inviting you to the “Virtual” Second Look Web page where you will be provided with additional information about our school.
Premedical Advisor Listserv
The VCU School of Medicine provides answers to premedical advisor questions via a listserv. All premedical advisors are invited to contact us with your name and e-mail address if you would like to be included on the listserv. This communication provides an opportunity to answer individual questions while benefiting others. You are encouraged to contact us individually for personal student-related questions. Please e-mail Mrs. Agnes Mack at almack@vcu.edu or Dr. Michelle Whitehurst-Cook at mwcook@vcu.edu for listserv inclusion and other inquiries. We appreciate the valuable information that you share with your students to prepare them for the medical school application process.
