Student Outreach Programs

The Office of Student Outreach Programs was created to enhance the mission of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine through recruitment, retention and programming efforts targeting students from populations that include, but are not limited to:

  • Populations underrepresented in medicine
  • Those from rural backgrounds
  • Persons considered non-traditional students

Services

Our services are available for medical students, current and future applicants and undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and non-traditional students with an interest in careers as physicians.

The following services are offered to students by appointment:

  • Advising
  • Counseling
  • Mentoring

Programs


  • Project ACEe (Academic, Career and Educational experiences)

    Project ACEe, a program sponsored by the School of Medicine, is designed to expose disadvantaged high school students to the medical profession by providing them with workshops and mentoring opportunities. Preference is given to students attending Richmond Public Schools, however, students from Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover county school systems are welcome to submit applications for consideridation.

    Project ACEe is a pipeline program that hopes to increase the number of disadvantaged health care practitioners who will practice in the state of Virginia.

  • Academic and Clinical Skills Symposium

    The Academic and Clinical Skills Symposium [PDF] is a joint project with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) that gives college and post-baccalureate students interested in health careers beneficial information and hands-on demonstrations so that they may become competitive medical school applicants.

    The Academic and Clinical Skills Symposium is held in the fall of each year, usually in October.

  • Historically Black Colleges and Universites (HBCU) Recruitment and Advising Visits

    HBCU recruitment and advising visits are designed to build relationships with pre-medical advisors and students at historically black colleges and universities in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina, by visiting campuses to talk with student groups or for day-long individual counseling sessions.

  • Second Look

    Second Look is an opportunity, in the spring semester, for selected students to come back and visit the VCU campus a second time for a more informal meeting with students, administrators and faculty.
