WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Overview of Medicine
This session is designed to help students understand and appreciate the wide variety of types of physicians. They will also learn how physicians choose specialties and the advantages and disadvantages of various choices.
Mnemonic Devices, Note-Taking and
Problem-Solving Skills
The ability to take effective notes and devise problem-solving strategies can change a student’s class performance and understanding of course work almost immediately. Mnemonics devices, methods for remembering information that is otherwise difficult to recall, often assist students with these skills. The first part of this workshop will address methods of taking notes, what is important when listening to a lecture, how to use mnemonic devices and how to listen and study attentively.
The skill in solving word problems is a major tool when reading math and science textbooks. The second part of this workshop will teach students ways to approach these problems and how to overcome the anxiety if there is any.
Have You Got What It Takes?
This session covers behaviors that can lead to success in college on the way to medical/professional school. It describes academic challenges/weakness in order that students can identify them and strategize ways to improve in problematic areas.
Taking Advantage of Financial Aid
For most students, bad habits are hard to break. This informative workshop explains what pre-health students need to know about financing their professional education, which includes learning how to prepare and use a budget.
Test-Taking Strategies and Skills
Students believe that if they just study hard enough they will get good grades. This is only partly true since the ability to take tests effectively also plays a part. This session will examine how testing is done and will help students understand the special skills that makes a person an effective test taker.
2nd Visit Program
This program gives ACEe participants the opportunity to join some of the School of Medicine matriculants during a formal dinner while they take a second look at our school. They will have the opportunity to interact with our medical students and meet some of the faculty and administrators of the school.
Smoking and Lung Cancer
This session is taught by one of our senior faculty members. The students will see, first hand damaging affects of smoking especially to the lungs. The session is held in the lab where students will be able to ask questions regarding the dangers of smoking, as cancerous lung specimens are explored.
Essay Writing
The purpose of this workshop is to assist the students in how to prepare an essay that will be helpful in getting them in college and professional school. The instructor will also offer some strategies that may be useful for dealing with the problems that occur at the various stages of the writing process.
College Planning
This course will help the ACEe participant be better able to make an educated decisions regarding what college to attend, and have the tools to be successful once they matriculate.
Motivational Tactics
This workshop will provide the student with self-help and personal development information to assist in increasing and maintaining a positive attitude towards college, fulfilling their goals and achieving their dreams.
Myers-Briggs and Learning Styles
The Myers-Briggs Type indicator is a measure of preferred behaviors. This session will not only allow students to learn about their own personal preferences, but will assist them in understanding how this effects learning. It will help them find learning styles that will enhance their ability to study effectively.
Technology in Medical Education
Medical schools are enhancing their teaching programs with a wide variety of technology. This session will allow students the opportunity to see how colleges and medical schools use technology and what the expectations are of students in using these new methods. This will be a hands-on experiences for students.
